THE WORD IS ITALIAN FOR ‘BIENNIAL’ OR ‘EVERY TWO YEARS’ AND REFERS TO A LARGE-SCALE, INTERNATIONAL, CONTEMPORARY ART EXHIBITION.
The history began with Venice Biennale which was first held in 1895 and soon became the template for similar such exhibitions held elsewhere in the world, including the Kochi-Muziris in Kerala since 2012. Over time, these massive events included other art forms and began to showcase trends in the creative arts world. The word ‘Biennale’ has become synonymous with such events. Biennales occupy a significant pride of place in the cultural calendar of the country or geographical region where they are organised, enjoying the patronage and support of Public Art Museums, Government Agencies, Philanthropic Organizations, Tourism Facilitators, and Individuals. A successful Biennale attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors and appreciators of art.
